New York, NY, USA – On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion shook Beirut, Lebanon, leaving numerous citizens injured and the city’s infrastructure damaged. The last included the Karagheusian Primary Healthcare center in Bourj Hammoud, operating there since 1941, as one of Lebanon’s key Primary Health Care centers. The HKCC established the GoFundMe campaign aiming at collecting funds to restore the Center.
While collecting contributions, several measures have been taken in order to continue the working process of the center.
The first response to the crisis in Lebanon, organized by the team, was setting up mobile medical centers in front of our Center to continue medical check-ups of our patients. In a month, the Center registered a record-breaking number of 10,000 visitors, screening 300 patients daily.
Besides the in-center vital healthcare check-ups and assistance, provided despite the damaged building, about 100 Armenian families have been identified who became affected by the blast and unable to come to our Center to receive medical care. Hence, the Center’s staff created a multidisciplinary team of a physician, a nurse, a physiotherapist, a phlebotomist, and a social worker to do outreach and provide home care support.
Aside from the continuation of the medical workload, the Center has also been engaging with other organizations in improving the community’s response to the crisis. In partnership with the International Office of Migration (IOM) & the International Labor Organization (ILO), the HKCC Lebanon center was able to help 50 young Armenians to find jobs (daily labor work) for 40 days to clean the highly damaged neighborhoods of Beirut city.
The Primary Health Care Center held an exciting workshop with kids organized by the “Save the Children,” during which children expressed themselves through arts and crafts.
Back-To-School mission by the Imagine Relief Mission Team, led by Seba Ali, distributed 50 packages of back-to-school must-haves and fresh organic products produced by local families from SHAMS and The Green Mill.
The Howard Karagheusian Foundation expresses its gratitude towards every donor who contributed to our campaign.
