New York, NY, USA – On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion shook Beirut, Lebanon, leaving numerous citizens injured and the city’s infrastructure damaged.
The last included the Karagheusian Primary Healthcare center in Bourj Hammoud, which has operated there since 1941, as one of Lebanon’s key Primary Health Care centers. The HKCC established a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to restore the Center.
While contributions are being sought, several measures have been taken to continue the working process of the center.
The first responders to the crisis in Lebanon organized mobile medical centers in front of our Center to continue medical check-ups of our patients. In a month, the Center registered a record-breaking number of 10,000 visitors, screening 300 patients daily.
In-center vital healthcare check-ups and assistance were provided despite damage to the building. However, about 100 Armenian families were affected by the blast and unable to come to our Center to receive medical care. Tthe Center’s staff responded by creating a multidisciplinary team including a physician, a nurse, a physiotherapist, a phlebotomist, and a social worker to conduct outreach and provide home care support.
In addition to continuing its medical workload, the Center has also been engaging with other organizations to improve the community’s response to the crisis. In partnership with the International Office of Migration (IOM) & the International Labor Organization (ILO), the HKCC Lebanon center was able to help 50 young Armenians to find jobs (daily labor work) for 40 days to clean the highly damaged neighborhoods of Beirut city.
The Primary Health Care Center held an exciting workshop with children organized by “Save the Children,” during which children expressed themselves through arts and crafts.
The Back-To-School mission by the Imagine Relief Mission Team, led by Seba Ali, distributed 50 packages of back-to-school must-haves and fresh organic products produced by local families from SHAMS and The Green Mill.
The Howard Karagheusian Foundation expresses its heartfelt gratitude towards every donor who contributed to our campaign.
